  • February 28, 2026

The right-angle prism, as a core basic component with simple structure and stable function in the optical system, possesses core functions such as 90° optical path deflection, image flipping, and optical path folding, as well as advantages of high reflection efficiency and easy installation alignment. It is widely applied in industrial inspection, scientific research experiments, and civilian optics, etc., and has become a key component for regulating the optical path in various optical devices.

I. Core Application Areas and Specific Directions

The core application of right-angle prisms revolves around three functions: light path redirection, image adjustment, and system integration. Specifically, it can be divided into the following four areas:

1. Industrial Laser and Precision Processing Field

In industrial laser equipment, the core function of the right-angle prism is to achieve precise 90° steering of the laser beam, and at the same time, through optical path folding, the equipment volume is reduced to meet the compact layout requirements of automated processing lines.

Specific application directions:

Optical path guidance for laser cutting / welding equipment

Beam steering system for laser marking machines

Optical path calibration module for laser distance meters

right-angle prisms

2. Imaging and Observation Optics Field

Right-angle prisms can achieve vertical or horizontal flipping of images through reflection, correcting the inverted image problem in imaging systems and simplifying the optical path design, thereby enhancing the portability of observation equipment.

Specific application directions:

Imaging steering components for telescopes and microscopes

Optical path transmission systems for endoscopes

Lens calibration modules for security surveillance cameras

3. Research and Measurement Field

In high-precision optical inspection equipment, the right-angle prism, with its high angle accuracy and low reflection loss, serves as the core component for optical path calibration and optical path control, ensuring the accuracy of inspection data.

Specific application directions:

Optical path folding module of spectrometers

Beam splitting and reflection components of interferometers

Optical reference elements of high-precision distance meters

4. Automotive and Consumer Electronics Field

With the miniaturization of automotive optics and consumer electronics, the optical path folding function of right-angle prisms has been widely applied, helping devices achieve lightweight and thin design.

Specific application directions:

Beam steering system for automotive LiDAR

Optical path folding component for mobile phone periscope cameras

Optical imaging module for virtual reality (VR) devices

right-angle prisms

II. Typical Application Examples Introduction

Example 1: Optical Path Guidance System of Industrial Laser Marking Machine

In fiber laser marking machines, a right-angle prism is installed between the laser output end and the galvanometer. The laser beam enters the right-angle face of the prism and undergoes total reflection along the inclined side, then deflects 90° and is directed towards the galvanometer.

By selecting a BK7 right-angle prism coated with a high-reflection dielectric film, a high reflectivity of ≥ 99.5% for 1064nm infrared laser can be achieved, reducing energy loss; at the same time, the angle accuracy of the prism is controlled within 5″, ensuring that the direction deviation of the laser beam after deflection is ≤ 0.01°, guaranteeing the clarity and precision of the marking pattern.

Example 2: Image Rotation Component of the Telescope

In the Kepler telescope, the image formed by the objective lens is inverted. A right-angle prism is used to make the image upright. When the inverted light enters the right-angle prism, it undergoes two 90° reflections and outputs a upright observation image.

Compared with the traditional reflector combination, the right-angle prism structure is integrated, eliminating the need for additional adjustment of the reflector angle and achieving higher installation accuracy; using K9 glass material with excellent optical uniformity can effectively reduce aberrations and improve the clarity of the observation field.

Example 3: Beam Steering Module of Vehicle-mounted LiDAR

In the scanning system of vehicle-mounted LiDAR, multiple right-angle prisms are arranged in an array to achieve rapid scanning of the laser beam. The prisms are made of fused silica and have excellent thermal stability, capable of adapting to temperature variations of -40℃ to 85℃ in the vehicle environment; their surfaces are coated with anti-reflection films to reduce laser transmission loss, improve the ranging accuracy and detection distance of the radar, and ensure the environmental perception capability of the autonomous driving system.

Example 4: Reference Components of High-Precision Interferometer

In the Michelson interferometer, the right-angle prism serves as the fixed reflecting mirror, providing a stable optical path reference for the formation of interference fringes. The surface shape accuracy of the prism is controlled within λ/20 (λ = 632.8nm), with an angle error of ≤ 3″, ensuring minimal wavefront distortion of the reflected beam; using a total reflection design, no coating is required, avoiding the influence of membrane layer aging on interferometer accuracy, and meeting the measurement requirements of nanometer-level precision in scientific research experiments.
