How to Use a Pentagonal Prism (Technical Instructions)

The core function of a pentagonal prism is to achieve a 90° light deflection without deviation, without changing the polarization state of the light and without image inversion. It is suitable for various precision optical systems. Its use must follow standardized procedures, taking into account installation accuracy, environmental adaptation, and maintenance to ensure stable optical performance. The following are detailed usage methods and precautions.

I. Core Premise for Use (Adaptation Preparation)

Match the material of the pentagonal prism with the scene: According to the used band (visible light/infrared), confirm the material of the pentagonal prism (BK7 is suitable for visible light, fused silica is suitable for infrared/high-power laser), to avoid light loss caused by the mismatch of the material and the light.

Environmental requirements: It should be installed in an environment with constant temperature (20 ± 0.5℃), high cleanliness (class 100), and no vibration. Dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations should be avoided to prevent affecting the optical path accuracy.

II. Specific Usage Steps

Precise installation: Special fixtures are used to secure the pentagonal prism, ensuring that the incident surface and the exit surface are perpendicular to the optical path. The installation deviation is ≤ 0.001mm/m, preventing optical path deviation and resulting steering errors.

Optical path alignment: Aim the incident light at the center of the prism's incidence surface, adjust the prism angle to ensure that the emergent light forms a 90° angle with the incident light, and calibrate the turning accuracy with a laser interferometer, with an error controlled within ±1″.

3. Parameter Adaptation: Adjust the incident light power according to the application scenario (to avoid exceeding the laser damage threshold of the prism). If higher light transmission is required, an anti-reflection coating model can be used in combination.

III. Precautions for Use

Avoid collision and scratches: Wear dust-free gloves during operation. Do not touch the optical surface directly to prevent fingerprints and scratches from affecting light transmission.

Regular maintenance: Clean the surface with anhydrous ethanol every three months, and regularly calibrate the installation angle and steering accuracy to prevent deviations from long-term use.

UltraOpto pentagonal prisms feature an angular tolerance of ≤±1″ and a surface shape accuracy of λ/20. Customizable in size and coating, they are suitable for applications such as lidar and precision measurement. When used strictly in accordance with the above methods, they can ensure long-term stable operation.
