TIR Prism

A TIR prism, also known as a total reflection prism, is typically made of optical glass, crystal or other transparent materials. It is composed of two triangular prisms, usually with the bevels of one prism undergoing total reflection (TIR), used to separate or alter the light path in a digital projection system, such as the illumination beam and the imaging beam. This structure enables TIR prisms to effectively control the direction of light propagation and perform functions such as deflection or focusing of light.

Features of the TIR prism:

High integration efficiency: TIR prisms can effectively concentrate and transmit light, improving the utilization rate of light energy.

Small light collection area:

Thanks to the special design of the prism, it can achieve efficient optical performance in a smaller area.

High light energy utilization:

Due to the characteristics of total internal reflection, TIR prisms can reduce light energy loss and improve the efficiency of light energy utilization.

Good uniformity:

TIR prisms can provide a uniform light distribution, keeping the light at a stable brightness during transmission.

Low light loss:

Due to reduced refraction and scattering of light, TIR prisms can reduce light loss and ensure the quality of light transmission.

UItraopto Precision Optics Co. Ltd. can stably provide this type of product through precise control of polishing, coating and bonding processes, and accepts custom prisms of various specifications.

Ultraopto’s TIR Prism, or Total Internal Reflection Prism, is a high-efficiency optical component engineered to redirect and control light beams through the principle of total internal reflection, delivering superior optical performance compared to traditional coated mirrors in precision optical and imaging systems. Crafted from high-quality optical glass and crystal materials, our TIR Prisms feature an optimized isosceles right triangular cross-sectional design that ensures light rays undergo complete internal reflection at the critical angle, achieving a reflectivity of over 99.5% with virtually no light absorption or transmission loss, maximizing light energy utilization and ensuring bright, stable light output for optical display and imaging systems. Unlike conventional mirrors that rely on metallic or dielectric coatings prone to oxidation, wear and UV degradation.

Our TIR Prisms use the inherent optical properties of the material for light reflection, eliminating coating failure and performance degradation over time, and requiring no periodic recalibration or replacement, significantly reducing maintenance costs for long-term use in industrial and consumer optical devices. This high-precision prism offers exceptional beam control and uniform light distribution, with integrated optical design that concentrates and transmits light efficiently in a compact area, making it ideal for miniaturized optical systems such as smartphone periscope cameras and portable medical endoscopes. Manufactured with ultra-precise grinding and polishing processes, we implement strict angular and dimensional tolerance control, ensuring accurate 90° beam redirection and perfect image orientation preservation without distortion or phase shift, critical for high-precision optical alignment and measurement systems. Our TIR Prisms exhibit excellent optical stability, with consistent performance across a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions, and can be combined with multiple prism units for complex light path design, meeting the diverse beam control requirements of professional optical systems.

We conduct rigorous multi-stage quality testing throughout the production process, from high-quality optical material selection to precision processing and finished product performance verification, ensuring each TIR Prism meets international high-end optical manufacturing standards and delivers reliable, consistent performance in critical applications. Ultraopto’s TIR Prisms are widely applied in a broad range of cutting-edge optical and industrial fields, including optical display systems such as laser TVs and projectors where they enhance color purity and brightness for high-definition imaging, and mobile device optics such as smartphone periscope cameras for changing light paths and achieving long-focus photography with compact design. They are also essential in medical devices such as endoscopes, delivering clear, bright medical images for accurate clinical diagnosis, and in optical communication systems for stable light signal transmission and conversion with high energy efficiency. Additionally, these high-efficiency prisms are used in precision measurement instruments including telescopes, microscopes and theodolites for light path redirection and focus control, in laser systems for accurate beam steering and shaping, and in solar energy converters for efficient solar light concentration and transmission, as well as in fingerprint recognition and meteorological observation equipment for precise optical sensing and detection.
