Off-Axis Parabolic Mirror

UItraopto Precision Optics Co. Ltd is a manufacturer of parabolic mirrors, offering custom parabolic mirrors for wavelengths ranging from UV (200 to 400nm) to IR (1 to 40µm). Parabolic mirrors are typically designed as a part of a larger parabolic curve and are made of metal substrates such as aluminum, and are coated with enhanced aluminum, silver, or gold as standard. These reflectors focus light in a manner similar to concave mirrors, with the only difference being that the off-axis parabolic design redirects the incident light to 90%.

According to the specifications of our customers, custom mirrors can be manufactured in a range of substrates and alternative coatings, including UV and IR coatings and materials, as well as alternative reflection angles.

Parabolic mirrors are usually made into off-axis parabolic reflectors, with the reflecting surface equivalent to a part of the parent parabolic mirror. These parts retain the ability of the parent parabolic mirror to focus convergent parallel light beams or collimated point light sources. This off-axis design separates the focus from the light path.

Each component is individually tested by our highly skilled technicians in our state-of-the-art metrology laboratory to ensure that all components meet our high-quality standards. The off-axis parabolic reflector with alignment through-holes (OAP) is designed with two through-holes. One aligns the light beam focused outside the parabolic surface to its focal point, and the other is parallel to the light beam that is collimated by the parabolic surface. The hole positions allow both beams to simultaneously hit the target or sample, which is a technique used for pump-probe measurements. These OAPs use an aluminum substrate and diamond, with a surface roughness of less than <50Å RMS, minimizing scattering. The OAP with alignment through-holes is coated with protective gold film, protective aluminum film, or UV-enhanced aluminum film, for integration into applications that require high reflectivity from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR) light sources.

The through-holes are parallel to the focused and collimated light beams.

Various metal coatings are available.

Surface roughness <50Å RMS.

Selection of high-quality base materials:

Adaptable to various application scenarios Crafted from high-quality substrates including aluminum, optical glass and composite materials, our Off-Axis Parabolic Mirror caters to diverse application requirements. Aluminum substrates offer excellent thermal conductivity and cost-effectiveness, ideal for radio telescopes and satellite dishes that require large apertures. Optical glass substrates (such as borofloat and synthetic quartz) provide superior optical quality for visible and laser applications, featuring high surface precision and stability. Composite substrates offer a lightweight solution for aerospace and portable optical systems, combining high strength and low weight. All substrates undergo precision machining to achieve the off-axis parabolic shape, with strict control over surface contour to ensure aberration-free performance. The substrate thickness is optimized for structural rigidity, preventing deformation under environmental stress.

Advanced coating process: Ensuring high reflectivity and durability Our Off-Axis Parabolic Mirror adopts advanced reflective coating technologies tailored to specific applications, including aluminum coatings, silver coatings and dielectric coatings. Aluminum coatings provide broadband reflectivity (>85%) across UV, visible and NIR ranges, making them ideal for general-purpose optical systems. Silver coatings offer higher reflectivity (>95%) in visible and IR bands, suitable for high-performance telescopes and laser systems. Dielectric coatings deliver ultra-high reflectivity (>99%) at specific wavelengths, optimizing performance for single-wavelength laser applications. The coating process ensures uniform film thickness and strong adhesion, with resistance to oxidation and environmental damage. For harsh environments, we offer protective overcoatings to extend service life and maintain reflection performance.

Core performance advantage:

Achieving aberration-free optical performance

Ultraopto’s Off-Axis Parabolic Mirror eliminates spherical aberration, a key advantage over spherical mirrors, enabling precise collimation and focusing of light beams. The off-axis design places the receiver (or source) at the focus without casting a shadow on the reflector, improving light collection efficiency. The mirror’s surface accuracy is controlled within λ/4 @632.8nm. ensuring exceptional optical performance for high-resolution applications. It features a high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT >5 J/cm² @1064nm) for laser applications, withstanding high-energy irradiation without damage. The clear aperture exceeds 90% of the total area, maximizing active light collection and projection. Strict dimensional tolerance control ensures compatibility with standard optical mounts and system integration.

Full-scenario application coverage:

Cross-industry energy collection and projection Our Off-Axis Parabolic Mirror is widely applied in industrial, scientific, aerospace and consumer fields. In astronomy, it serves as the core component in reflecting telescopes, collecting and focusing weak celestial light for high-resolution imaging. In laser systems, it collimates divergent laser beams into parallel beams for long-distance transmission or focuses parallel beams into high-intensity spots for material processing. For satellite dishes and microwave relay stations, it radiates and receives narrow beams of radio waves for point-to-point communications. In acoustics, parabolic microphones use similar principles to record faraway sounds for sports reporting and wildlife monitoring. The mirror also finds use in solar furnaces (collecting solar energy for high-temperature applications), car headlights and stage spotlights (projecting focused beams of light), and radar systems (locating aircraft, ships and vehicles).
