The infrared linear variable filter is a narrowband filter, and its central wavelength (CWL) changes with the distance along the length. The infrared variable filters we produce cover three ranges: 0.9 - 1.7 microns, 1.3 - 2.5 microns, and 2.5 - 5.0 microns.
The width/FWHM = 1% x central wavelength. The average outer passband optical cutoff exceeds OD 3.5. It is particularly suitable for systems with high signal-to-noise ratio requirements.
We also produce custom LVFs. Please contact us for further discussion.
Applications include microspectrometers, multi-gas analysis, industrial process monitoring, etc.

Ultraopto’s Infrared Linear Variable Filter is a specialized tunable optical filter engineered for infrared spectral applications, featuring a linearly varying center wavelength across the filter surface to enable continuous spectral tuning in the IR band, serving as a core component in infrared spectroscopy, remote sensing, thermal imaging and aerospace optical sensors. Crafted from high-purity infrared-transparent substrates including fused silica, germanium and zinc selenide, our product is optimized for the near-infrared (NIR), mid-infrared (MIR) and far-infrared (FIR) spectral ranges, with standard tunable ranges covering 700-2500nm and fully customizable ranges up to 10000nm, meeting the diverse infrared spectral detection needs of different professional applications.
Manufactured with advanced ultra-precise wedge coating and ion beam sputtering technology, the filter delivers a high average transmittance of ≥75% in the target IR passband, with a narrow full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) and steep spectral edges, ensuring high spectral resolution and precise infrared spectral isolation, while the rejection region features an optical density of ≥3, effectively blocking visible light and unwanted infrared radiation to maximize the detection sensitivity of weak infrared signals.
We adopt strict precision processing and coating technology for infrared optical components, achieving a superior surface quality with minimal scattering and absorption loss in the infrared band, and a clear aperture of over 90% to ensure efficient infrared light transmission. The filter features a compact and lightweight structural design with customizable dimensions and linear gradient rates, enabling seamless integration into portable infrared spectrometers, miniaturized thermal imaging devices and space-constrained aerospace optical systems, and the durable hard coatings exhibit excellent environmental stability and mechanical resistance, withstanding extreme temperature changes, humidity and industrial field wear, ensuring long-term stable operation in harsh outdoor remote sensing, industrial high-temperature detection and aerospace space environments. Our Infrared Linear Variable Filter also features low thermal expansion coefficient and stable spectral performance under temperature variation, avoiding wavelength drift and signal distortion caused by environmental temperature changes, which is crucial for high-precision infrared spectral measurement and quantitative analysis.
Ultraopto’s Infrared Linear Variable Filter is widely applied in professional infrared optical fields, including infrared spectroscopy for conducting detailed chemical composition and molecular structure analysis of materials by detecting infrared absorption and emission spectra, and remote sensing for capturing multi-spectral infrared images of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere to achieve environmental monitoring, resource exploration and meteorological forecasting. In thermal imaging, it enables continuous spectral tuning to match different thermal radiation wavelengths, improving the contrast and resolution of thermal images for industrial non-destructive testing, building thermal insulation detection and human body temperature screening. It also serves as an essential component in aerospace optical sensors for infrared spectral detection of celestial bodies and space environments, in industrial process monitoring for real-time detection of high-temperature industrial reactions and gas emissions, and in biomedical research for infrared imaging of biological tissues and non-invasive medical diagnosis. Additionally, the filter is used in infrared laser systems for tunable wavelength selection and beam shaping, as well as in laboratory infrared optical experiment platforms for academic research and new material development.
